WHat is Choice Based Lettings?

Choice Based Lettings (CBL) became the way social housing is let in Tower Hamlets in 2002. Available homes are advertised and applicants on the housing list can choose the homes they want to be considered for by ‘bidding’ for any homes they feel are suitable.

CBL encourages applicants to choose the area, type and floor level of their next home.

Does it mean I will be rehoused quicker?

No. CBL does not mean there will be more homes available for rent. However, it does mean you would not be re-housed if you do not take an active role in the bidding process.

If you limit your choice (for example to a house in a certain part of the borough) you will restrict your chances of re-housing. It is advisable to consider all suitable homes in all parts of the borough.

Does being on the Housing List a long time help?

Properties are let in accordance to need. The Lettings Policy places applicants into one of 4 groups – called community groups.  Length of time on the housing list will be considered when all other housing need circumstances are the same between two or more applicants.

How do I 'bid' for a property?

Properties are advertised in the East End Life newspaper, on-line at www.thhs.org.uk and in THCH offices and Council offices. The advert will consist of a photo of the property and a brief description. Further details, including information about the local area, are available on-line.

Will I hear anything after I 'bid'?

Due to the high number of bids made each week (20,000 on average) THCH are unable to contact applicants if they are unsuccessful. We will only contact applicants if we are to make an offer.

How many offers will I be made?

If you are lucky enough to be made an offer, but decide to refuse it, you can continue to bid for other advertised homes.

However, if you have been granted enhanced status due to your circumstances (eg keyworker priority, management priority) this may be withdrawn – you should always check with the Lettings Team before refusing an offer.
