THCH helped residents celebrated the Bengali New Year, or Pohela Boishakh festival, on 10 April.
Over 400 families and their children enjoyed a fun afternoon of games and entertainment as THCH helped mark the occasion of the Bengali New Year on Saturday, 10 April.
The event, which is a time of festival and enjoyment in much of Bangladesh and West Bengali in India, is a time for families and friends to socialise, entertain and enjoy themselves and marks the start of the Bengali New Year.
This year, our event was held at our brand new £1million purpose built community centre in Martha Street on the Tarling East Estate, Shadwell. The sunny weather helped swell the crowds who also had a chance to explore the new centre for the first time.
There was a range of activities for young and hold on the day, with children being kept busy with face painting, henna painting, clowns and a drawing competition, whilst older residents tried their hand a 'caron', a traditional Bengali board game before all partygoers were entertained by song and dance acts and a comedy theatre production.
Children from the Tarling East Estate were also on hand to liven things up with a Brazilian drum act.
Mayor of Tower Hamlets, Ahmed Adam Omer was joined by various prospective parliamentary and local council candidates at the event.
THCH Community Developemnt Officer, Shamim Hossain said "We wanted to recreate the fesitvals held throughout Bangladesh and to bring residents together to share in this special time and learn a little about all our various customs and traditions".
