Inspirational residents in Tower Hamlets have been recognised at a community awards ceremony for their dedication to improving the lives of others and area's in which they live.

The winners of the second annual STAR in the Community Awards were announced at a gala event held at the East Wintergarden in Canary Wharf, which was hosted by David Orr, Chief Executive of the national Housing Federation.

The night was a celebration of volunteers who champion the needs of the young, the old, the vulnerable and help set up activities in their neighbourhoods.

In total, thirteen awards were presented with two THCH residents winning awards.

Congratulations to Fulma Begum who was awarded with the THCH Inspirational Resident of the Year Award and Ken Davies, who won the Environmental Resident of the Year Award.

Ken is a lead member in the Winterton House Organic Gardening Club and is always volunteering to help the group and it's members grow a huge range of fruit and vegetables. Fulma, who has formed a popular Zumba Class Group in Bethnal Green said "I decided to set up the dance class and managed to get THCH to provide the venue and a small grant and through word of mouth, the group has grown and is very popular".

Fulma added "I feel intensely privileged to be included in a group of individuals who inspire their communities".

Poplar and Limehouse MP, Jim Fitzpatrick and Lead Member for Housing, Councillor Rabina Khan presented the awards, with Jim Fitzpatrick MP saying "It's great that residents' achievements are being recognised as without the work of these inspirational people, the borough would not be the fantastic place it is today".
