Mayor Ahmed Omer opens THCH's largest new build development
THCH's new development of mixed tenure homes in Bethnal Green was officially opened by the Mayor of Tower Hamlets, Councillor Ahmed Omer on 8 November.
The new homes are on the site of the former run-down Bradley House and next to the iconic Keeling House, the first council tower block in London and now a Grade 2 listed building.
The new homes have been designed to be 'tenure neutral', meaning the rented, shared ownership and outright for sale properties benefit from many of the same design features. Many of the homes have their own street frontage and a defensible space in front to increase the security aspect whilst the plans for the development have also paid tribute to the original street design and to the nearby Keeling House
Director of Development, Peter Exton said "From the beginning, it was important to reflect the original street plan, we wanted to complient Keeling House but also meet the social housing needs".
The social element of the development includes 22 homes let to applicants on the Council's waiting list - of which 10 are large 4-bed houses, and 4 are 3-bed maisonettes.
Opening the development, Mayor Omer said he had witnessed the scheme rise over the last 6 months and "It was a great privilege that I have been asked to open these new homes for local people".
THCH Chief Executive, Mike Tyrrell, paid tribute to Hill Partnerships for delivering the scheme saying "I am pleased so many homes have their own street frontage and direct access, and added to the superb interior space, I am positive all these homes will be appreciated by all the new residents moving in over the coming weeks and months".
Lead Member for Housing & Development, Councillor Marc Francis also spoke at the opening, saying "East Enders have the right to expect decent and afforable housing and we are grateful to THCH and Hill Partnerships for all their efforts to ensure more of our people get them".
