Claredale scheme recognised at the prestigious Civic Trust Awards held in Manchester
THCH distinctive Claredale scheme in Bethnal Green have been nationally recognised by winning a Civic Trust award at a ceremony held at the People's History Museum in Manchester on 4 March 2011.
Awards were presented to the best new national and international buildings, public spaces, restorations and public art. The 2011 awards were presented by Civic Trust patron, architect and TV presenter, George Clarke.
Pictured recieving the award is THCH's Deborah Crow and Peter Exton and Iain Carson of Karakusevic Carson Architects.
The award was presented for the successful housing development, described by visiting judges as "fitting with the grain of the Victorian housing prevalent in the area, putting back the urban design quality previously lost. Streets and scale have been re-established, with massing and materials all appropriate and sympathetic to the context.
A range of dwelling types with well planned interiors has been provided with mixed tenure, to facilitate a truly inclusive, diverse community, which works well as an accessible space, encouraging social links, security and a sense of neighbourhood responsibility.
A great deal has been achieved within a restricted budget elevating this development to a league above most projects of this type, creating aspirational housing, neighbourhood improvements, better streetscape and environmental innovation".
Civic Trust Awards managing Director, Malcolm Hankey said "the Awards celebrate not only design excellence, but also the relationship between structures, places, the environment and communities. Winning projects have demonstrated architectural excellence whilst offering cultural, social or economic benefit to the local community".
