Project offering training and work placements for local people starting April 2011
The Whitechapel Gallery will run a 2 year training and work placement programme for 12 young people using a dedicated grant - The Heritage Lottery Fund's Skills for the Future programme. Trainees will learn a range of accredited cultural heritage skills within the gallery including conservation and research skills, digital technology training and community engagement.
The gallery, which first opened in 1901, presents a wealth of modern and contemporary art giving trainees excellent hands-on experience in the museums and arts sector.
The gallery is looking to recruit full time positions (starting in April 2011) in 6 different departments:
- Exhibition Trainee
- Education Trainee
- Communications Trainee
- Development Trainee
- Operations Trainee
- Visitor Services Trainee
The trainees will gain valuable departmental skills in their chosen department combined with workshops and training for special heritage skills. The training will complement the work of the department and allow trainees to gain gain an insight into how heritage and conservation is relevant across the gallery by undertaking a project management course, research into local history, collection conservation, customer care and communications.
Salary: £13,000 per annum, for each traineeship (salary includes annual national insurance and tax contributions)

Open days at the gallery
Two open days will be held at the gallery to provide interested candidates the opportunity to speak with members of staff, visit the exhibitions and attend small workshops in "How to fill out an application form".
The workshops take place on 22 February 10am - 1pm and 24 February 5pm - 8pm.
