We’re taking part in #NoMowMay

This May, we’re proudly taking part in #NoMowMay. By having a break from mowing the grass, the bees, butterflies, and other wildlife will flourish in their natural habitat.
Over the coming weeks, we will
- Cut a border of 1 metre around the edges of all grass areas. The rest is going to be left to grow wild.
- Leave bushes that are flowering alone but continue to trim those that don’t have anything to do with pollen.
- Continue to weed concreted areas to keep our spaces tidy.
Significant habitat loss across the UK means that grassy areas have become more important as a major source of nectar. If we don’t mow wildflowers down before they flower, they’ll bloom and provide pollen for bees and other wildlife.
By mowing the grass less frequently, enough nectar sugar can be provided for ten times the number of bees, butterflies, moths, beetles, and other pollinators.
Although it may not always feel like it, London is (allegedly) the greenest city in Europe. A new study reveals we've got an astonishing 3,000 green spaces, which gives even more reason to take pride in our green spaces (read more about that here).
Our Environmental Services Manager, Carrie Hodges, has led the way in THCH getting involved in the campaign. She said:
Being involved in #NoMowMay truly reflects THCH’s value of being proud. We’re proud of our community, and we know we can play a big role in helping the environment around us by being involved with a campaign such as this one.
So, if the grass is looking a little longer and more flowery than usual, don’t be alarmed, it’s all for #NoMowMay.
